How to register a business in Rwanda (RDB)

8 min read

You can register a company with the Rwanda Development Board online. Here is the simple path, what you need, and what to set up after you get your certificate.

Who this is for: New owners and people formalising a small business

Register on the official RDB site

Company registration in Rwanda is done with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). You can start online. This page is general information, not legal advice. Always follow the steps on the official site.

Official portal: businessprocedures.rdb.rw — and the company system at urs.rdb.rw. RDB’s office is on KG 9 Ave in Kigali if you need in-person help.

Pick a simple company type

Most small and growing businesses choose a private company limited by shares (Ltd). It can have one owner. Foreign owners are allowed. There is no minimum capital for this common type.

  • check_circlePrivate Ltd — good if you want a real company name, a bank account, and room to hire or add a partner later
  • check_circleSole trader — simpler, but you are personally responsible for the business
  • check_circleIf you are unsure, ask RDB or a local accountant before you click submit

What you usually need

Have these ready before you start the form:

  • check_circleA company name (have 2–3 options in case one is taken)
  • check_circlePassport or Rwanda national ID for each owner and director
  • check_circleA Rwanda office address — even a small rented desk can work
  • check_circleA phone number and email you check every day
  • check_circleA short description of what the company will do

What happens after you apply

Online company registration is designed to be fast — often within a working day once your file is complete. You should receive a certificate and a TIN. Registration itself is free on the RDB side; banks, lawyers, or office rent are separate.

  • check_circleOpen a business bank account with your certificate
  • check_circleIf you hire staff, register with RSSB
  • check_circleRegister for VAT with RRA when you reach the threshold they publish
  • check_circleIf you are a foreign director working from Rwanda, check visa and work permit rules on Irembo

After RDB: customers still need to find you

A certificate does not bring customers. Once you are registered, put the company name on WhatsApp Business, Google Maps, and a simple website. That is the part we help with.

We do not replace RDB or your accountant. We build the website, app, or WhatsApp setup so people can reach the company you just registered.

Common questions

Is RDB company registration free?

The online company registration step is free on the RDB side. You may still pay for an office address, a bank account, a lawyer, or a work permit if those apply to you.

Can a foreigner own a company in Rwanda?

Yes, 100% foreign ownership is allowed for a typical private Ltd. You still need a local address and the documents RDB lists. Check the official portal for the latest rules.

Can DrayenGroup register the company for me?

We can walk you through the tech and the customer-facing setup after you register. Company filing should be done on the official RDB site, or with a licensed local advisor if you want someone to file for you.

Want a website, an app, or a simple system?

Tell us what customers ask you every day. We will say whether you need a website, an app, or just a clearer WhatsApp setup — then we can build it.
